Ukrainian pathologists charged with stealing eyeballs

Kyiv region prosecutor’s office referred to the court cases against three medical workers accused of unlawful seizure of the eyeballs in dead bodies, reported UkraNews. According to the prosecutor’s office seized cadaveric tissue were transferred to one of the ophthalmic clinics in Kiev and were used for transplantation.

The criminal case against two leaders of the Kiev office of the regional bureau of forensic medical examination and head of the pathology department of a central district hospital area were initiated in February.

According to investigation, removal of the eyeballs of corpses illegally and without the knowledge of relatives of the deceased were conducted during the autopsy. In the case referred to 26 such episodes.

According to the report, during the investigation, suspects were fully admitted their guilt.
