Obama asked to help Yanukovych nuclear disarmament

President Barack Obama sent a letter to his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yanukovych, which asked him for help in nuclear disarmament.

The American leader asked the Ukrainian “reach out” to those countries that have not participated in the Summit on Nuclear Safety, held in Washington in mid-April. Obama has expressed his hope that Ukraine will be able to persuade these countries to abandon uranium enrichment uncontrolled.

In addition, the U.S. president thanked Yanukovych for the decision to abandon stocks of highly enriched uranium remaining in Ukraine since Soviet times.

“This was an important decision that should serve as a global model,” - wrote Obama.

As previously reported, at a summit in Washington on the main news was the decision to get rid of Yanukovych weapons-grade uranium. In the world of this step of the Ukrainian authorities deserve strong support, but at home the opposition criticized it. According to Yanukovych’s opponents, he is “a photograph with Obama” passed the most important resource of the country.

In addition to Ukraine at the summit discussed issues of nuclear disarmament and the need for suspension of uranium enrichment in Iran.

However, the president of this country, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the forum did not participate.
