Three-quarters of residents voted against the renaming of Dnepropetrovsk

People’s deputy of Ukraine Alexander Vilkul (fraction “opposition bloc”) proposes to leave the former name of Dnepropetrovsk city, filling it with a different semantic meaning - “the city in honor of St. Peter on the Dnieper,” - because 80 percent of citizens are opposed to renaming.

According to him the new name of Dnepropetrovsk content as the city of the Apostle Peter, a prerequisite for spiritual union of citizens, the entire city community. Not to argue about history, “we are taking names for our hometown reconciling semantic foundation.”

“Our proposal - to erect a monument of St. Peter and St. Andrew at Railway Square, showing tolerance in our city, that he - a real European metropolis which combines the great spiritual values ​​of two civilizations - the East and West”, - said the MP.

As reported, one of the city sites for a new vote takes place the city on the Dnieper River.

The fourth most populous city in Ukraine after Kiev, Kharkov and Odessa. The town was originally conceived as the third capital of the Russian Empire, after Moscow and St. Petersburg.

After the adoption of 9 April 2015 the law “On the prohibition of propaganda of the Communist and National Socialist totalitarian regimes”, for nine months, local authorities have decided to rename Dnepropetrovsk and the eponymous region. In July, it began a survey of residents of the city and August will begin public hearings on the options of renaming Dnepr, Dnepr, Dneproslav, Dnepropol, Sicheslav, Kodak, New Kodak and Svyatoslav.
