Ukraine agreed to buy Russia’s gas at a high price

The state company Naftogaz of Ukraine agreed to pay for Russia’s gas supplied in January-February 2008, at 321 dollars per thousand cubic meters. About this newspaper “Businessman” referring to the treaty signed by the deputy chair of the Board of Naftogaz of Ukraine “Ihor Didenko and executive directors of RosUkrEnergo Dmitry Glebko and Konstantin Chuichenko. The volume of procurement in the document are not given.

Gazprom expressed surprise at the cost of gas, designated in the contract, because in Russia the company consider a fair price of 314.7 dollars per thousand cubic meters. At the same time Ukraine of gas shall purchase from the Central Asian suppliers of 179.5 dollars per thousand cubic meters, which resulted, as considered Kommersant, Kiev will pay for the fuel for approximately 240 dollars per thousand cubic meters.

While the contract has already delivered in January and February natural gas is not signed. To expedite negotiations, Gazprom in early March, cut off gas supplies to Ukraine by 50 percent, but this measure did not produce the expected result. Talks between Gazprom and Naftogaz will continue this week.

In early March, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko announced that it would not fulfill the agreement between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Viktor Yushchenko on the price of Russia’s gas to 315 dollars per thousand cubic meters. In response, Yushchenko has declassified its directive to negotiate the procurement of fuel, in which there was no word on the cost of gas.
