72% of residents of Ukraine in favor of raising the status of Russian language

For the first time in the past few years the number of supporters of Ukraine’s federalization equaled the number of opponents of this idea. The statement was made director of the Ukrainian branch of the Institute of CIS countries, Vladimir Kornilov, during the presentation of the results of a sociological survey conducted by IFAK Ukraine.

According to the expert, so far all the polls showed that the number of supporters of the federal idea in Ukraine is considerably less. This Kornilov said that the survey was conducted between the first and second rounds of presidential elections, and suggested that the outcome of these elections, supporters of a federal structure is in the western part of the country does not yet support this idea could be more.

Kornilov also stressed that, in general, Ukrainian citizens calmly accept the idea of keeping the Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol after 2017, and those who demand early withdrawal of the fleet, are in absolute minority.

The poll also revealed that 72% of residents in favor of raising the status of Russian language, and more than half of Ukrainians believe that the Russian language should receive a second state language along with Ukrainian.
